Why Christopher Lloyd and Robert Zemeckis Didn't Make a Movie Together After Back to the Future 3?

The interpreter of Doc, however, loved shooting under the direction of the filmmaker.

TMC will wrap up its rerun of the Back to the Future trilogy tonight. A sequel in which Marty (Michael J. Fox) and Doc (Christopher Lloyd) return to the time of westerns. In the Première Classics n°15 (April-June 2021, with Inspector Harry on the cover), the latter looks back at length on his career, and reveals that he would have loved to find Robert Zemeckis on a new project after this successful saga.

Explaining that he initially refused Back to the Future, before being convinced by his wife to accept the offer of director and producer Steven Spielberg, he explains that he particularly appreciated their collaboration: "(Zemeckis) is a very 'real' person, very clever. He has a sharp point of view on what works and doesn't work in cinema. Obviously, I was not aware of the enormous potential of Back to the Future, but in chatting with Bob, I began to understand the character of Doc, and I could see that he knew exactly what he wanted to do. But at the same time, he remained open to all proposals. I remember having him shyly submitted Doc Brown's idea for long, messy hair (…) He just said, 'OK, that's perfect!' Confident but ready to listen to others. Robert Zemeckis inspires confidence: touring with him was obvious."

Why Christopher Lloyd and Robert Zemeckis don't Didn't make a movie together after Back to the Future 3?

Hence our question: why did you no longer tour under his direction after the release of Back to the Future 3, in 1990? Especially since the two men had in the meantime teamed up again for Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, released between Back to the Future and its sequel, in 1988. “Simply because he didn’t ask me! the actor. I imagine he never made any other films where I would have found my place. He just has to call, I say 'yes' in the moment." During the interview, he also admits to having feared that the role of Doc would stick too much to his skin, following the crazy success of the three films: "I accepted it, but it worried me. I was afraid that I was being pigeonholed, that I was only being offered roles similar to Doc. And yet... They continued to offer me very different characters in spite of that. I quickly realized that it was not not an obstacle to my career, on the contrary: it opened up new possibilities for me. So obviously, Doc is the dominant role in my filmography, the one in which the most people have seen me and to which I always come back. But I I have no problem leaning on it as long as I have the freedom to do other things. And who knows? Maybe one day I'll find a role that eclipses it? (He smiles)"
