MANUAL MOWER

Up to 100 m2 of lawn (or even double if you really like exercise), an exmark mower is enough in a main residence. On the other hand, for a second home, they are to be avoided, because the helical blades are ineffective against the tall grass which thrives in your absence. The manual mower is simple in design, light (from 7 to 10 kg) and generally inexpensive. However, if the prices start around fifty euros, they can climb to more than 200 € for the most successful models (with collection bag). In addition to their ease of use, manual mowers offer the advantage of leaving the ears at rest and requiring almost no maintenance.

Corded electric mowers are best suited to intermediate areas (200 to 750 m2). Almost as efficient as thermal ones, they are much less noisy, simpler to put into action, do not require maintenance and are more mechanically reliable. They are also cheaper to buy: there are good models from 150 €. Be careful, below this budget, quality and efficiency may not be there. Finally, corded electric mowers consume little energy (ten times less than a thermal one). Their defect is the thread on the leg, which is really annoying in wooded terrain or strewn with obstacles.

BATTERY ELECTRIC MOWER

Increasingly present on the market, battery-powered mowers are becoming interesting both in terms of prices and ease of use. As efficient as corded electric mowers, machines of this type are intended for small areas, up to a maximum of 500 m2, because of their limited autonomy (about thirty minutes depending on the type of lawn). It is better to opt for a model that comes with two batteries, which allows you to double the working time. On the price side, they do not necessarily cost much more to buy than a wired electric mower. Beware, however, of the price of the batteries, which must be changed after a certain number of cycles (a few hundred, depending on the manufacturer): their price can rise to €200, or more than half the cost of the mower.

THERMAL MOWER

Operating with a gasoline engine, the thermal mower becomes almost indispensable beyond 1,000 m2 of land. It is the most powerful, the most effective and it is the one that best meets the most diverse needs. The disadvantage is that it requires regular maintenance (oil change, spark plug and filter replacement, etc.) and requires a larger budget (purchase, fuel cost, etc.). From 3,000 m2, it is necessary to move towards a ride-on mower, that is to say a small tractor.

SELF-PROPELLED MOWER OR NOT?

Most petrol mowers are, so you usually won't have to wonder. The function is more rarely available on electric models. The self-propelled mower is very useful on sloping and/or uneven terrain, as the wheels are driven by the engine and mowing requires almost no effort from the user. On flat ground, this feature is of little use unless your mower is exceptionally heavy.
