Vinted, Leboncoin, Ebay… Sales of second -hand products on online platforms jumped in 2020 with the two confinements.Caulted at home, many French people took the opportunity to sort their cabinets, empty their attic and resell the goods they no longer wanted to keep on the internet. But should the income from this activity be declared to the taxman? It depends.

If you sell occasionally

Revenues from the occasional sale of goods during a garage sale or on a specialized site are not taxable. You therefore have nothing to declare to taxes, unless the amount of the transaction exceeds € 5,000.This threshold is understood by sale and not over the whole year.

When you sell a property whose price is more than € 5,000 (furniture, household appliances or cars are exempt), you are subject to the capital gains taxation of the transfer of movable property. This means that the capital gain generated (the difference between the purchase and sale price) will be taxed at the rate of 19 %, to which is added 17.2 % of social security contributions.Or an overall rate of 36.2 %.This tax must be paid in the month of the transfer to your tax center by means of form n ° 2048-M.The declaration must be accompanied by the payment of rights.

Ventes d’objet sur internet : faut-il les déclarer aux impôts ?

Likewise, the transfers of gold, precious metals, jewelry, art objects, antiquity or collection, the price of which is greater than € 5,000, are subject to a special tax, called flat taxOn precious objects, whose rate varies according to the nature of the property (11 % for precious metals and 6 % for others), to which must be added 0.5 % of CRDS.You must pay it in the month of the transfer via the 2091 print. It is however possible to opt for the taxation of capital gains on the sale of furniture if it is more favorable, especially if you canProve that you have had good for a long time (reduction for duration of detention).

Good to know

Since 2020, collaborative online platforms must send, no later than January 31 of each year, a statement of operations carried out and the gross amount collected as such to each of their users and the tax administration.
