Car sellers give unsecoric advice

Amanda Rowan-Miletich bought a used Nissan Rogue from a dealer. She remembers spending hours chatting with the seller before making the decision. The vehicle had to transport its most precious cargo, its boys of three and five years and their little brother to be born.

After the birth of her baby, she learns, however, that the vehicle she bought cannot contain three children's car seats.Automotive manufacturer's documents advise against it.

Amanda Rowan-Miletich did not make her mistake until several months after the vehicle is purchased, after the birth of her child. But since there is no period of grace in Ontario, it could not have returned the vehicle even in the days following its purchase.

The mother of Brockville in Ontario says that she contacted the seller, then Nissan Canada, without success, and had to resolve to resell the vehicle at a loss to buy another, larger.

Nissan Canada refused to give an interview to the invoice.A spokesperson, in a written statement, is limited to saying that the manufacturer aims to give dealers and customers the right information on the high safety standards of his vehicles.

Our team contacted, in person or on the phone, 27 sellers of four different car manufacturers.

A saleswoman even was unaware of what anchor points for children's siege and confused them with the loops of safety belts.

The lack of knowledge of car sellers concerning children's seats does not surprise the president of the Seats for Kids association, which informs consumers about the safety of children by car.

Claude Normandin stresses that the installation rules are numerous and often complex. The type of seat and the type of vehicle must be considered.

In some small cars, for example, the installation of a newborn seat, which requires a clearance, may make it impossible to use the passenger seat at the front.

The number of belts or seats in a vehicle does not guarantee that it is possible to install so many child safety seats.

In other vehicles, even if there are three belts on the rear seat, their cross installation can prevent the three places at the same time at the same time.

Ms. Normandin claims that the only way for parents to be sure that a vehicle can contain the car seats their children need is to test it by following all the rules of installation.

When we communicated again with the sellers, some of them said they generally advised buyers to test with their own seats.

The report by Katherine Brulotte and Jean-François Vézina is broadcast on the bill on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 12:30 p.m..
