Magic the Gathering: 6 pros tips to win

Card games that have been happy with collectors for almost thirty years, Magic The Gathering has a community of solid players. But for beginners, it is sometimes difficult to win.CNews asked two pros to provide advice.

Before all words, this article starts from the principle that you know the basic rules of the game. The players Jean-Emmanuel Depraz, alias Jirock, member of the Magic Pro League, and Thierry Ramboa, A.K.A El_gran_boa, both well known to French playersFor their Twitch channels, tell us their advice to put the odds on its side in order to have a good level and keep the mistakes not to be made in mind.

learn from your choices and agree to lose

Jirock: “The most basic error is to have an approach oriented on results more than on the process.Magic is a game where you can't win every time.If you think you are making a decision that is 50% of us to succeed and it goes wrong, that does not necessarily mean that this choice was incorrect. It is therefore by focusing on the process that we progress faster.

It should be kept in mind that even the best players at Magic reach percentages of victory only from 60 to 65 %.Which is very little if we compare it to failures for example where the best will always win or almost. It is therefore important not to pay attention to the results, the perfection not being realistic ”.

Be very attentive to what is happening

El_Gran_boa: “Being serious on the table or facing the screen.Pay attention to everything that is going on.Observe well in what order the opponent plays his cards, his facial expressions (if you play in front of him), but even for the online game we can realize clues, for example by studying the speed of the game of'opponent.Indeed, we can say that a player who plays quickly follows his strategy or if he is happy to draw a card he will play it very quickly (it is a fairly unconscious reflex).Be very careful not to underestimate your opponent. For example when you don't understand why it does an action, you tend from the principle that it makes a mistake. While in reality, we can just explore the field of cards a little more, to deduce a little of its strategy. ”

Jirock: “The game can easily overwhelm a beginner player because there is a lot of things going on.When you start, be content with a simple game may not seem satisfying because you sometimes want to do more complex things. But there is no shame to start with simple decks and then to approach various aspects of the game as it is mastered. There is also a strategic interest in positioning its cards in a homogeneous manner on the game table. Beyond the aesthetic aspect, I think that the more clear a board, the more easily we can find ourselves.Even if this last point is undoubtedly secondary ”.

Read his cards well

El_Gran_boa: “It's important. We will never repeat it enough, but a big part of the errors made comes from the fact that we have read a card badly. ”

Jirock: “You shouldn't try to go too far too fast.Magic remains a very complex game. Before starting to plan what your opponents will do with two laps in advance or to cross certain caps, you have to know your cards well, do not miss the ability to trigger your permanent(like keeping an eye on the cards placed in the cemetery of his opponents).Just doing this, we can become strong enough without doing something extraordinary ”.

Missing on red or white cards to start

Ramboa: “To start, in my opinion the white is indicated. There are small creatures. We only focus on an axis of play, that is to say the choice of creatures and booster them. This allows you to learn the basics of Magic, the fighting phases.I think that even at very high level knowing how to manage these phases is important.Block, attack, know how to do it, when double block, etc.It is one of the most complicated points to apprehend, but also very simple to understand since the goal is to reduce the opponent's points of life.Red is also interesting when you start, since it allows you to understand how anti-beasts work.Understand how many tower I will need to use them and calculate the debates.Conversely, I think blue is one of the most complicated to understand ”.

Jirock: "Starting with red is interesting in my opinion, because it is a very homogeneous color in what it seeks to do, to know: kill the opponent as quickly as possible. Here we risk being lost in different game plans.Green is also interesting to start. Its spectrum is wider, but this color tends to play in ritual, there are fewer interactions with the opponent, to be able to focus on your cards to oneself ”.

preserve your life ... and "spend"

Jirock: “Regarding the life points, beginner players tend to try to protect them at all costs. However, there is a fairly known adage of the competitive players of Magic: "The only point of life that counts is the last".All the others are there to be spent.Often you have to agree to take damage, so as not to spend certain resources that can be interesting to exploit in the attack phases ”.

El_Gran_boa: “At the same time, there are three ways to preserve your life. You can win, with white and black decks.Or nullify opposing cards with adequate cards (spells and anti-beasts ...).Here we will be in a more wait -and -see strategy for a given time to release a bigger threat than the opponent will have to manage. It is also interesting to think of nullifying the attacks with larger creatures than those of the opponent since if we block, he will not be able to attack ”.

keep a simple deck

Jirock: “The net decking which consists in copying the decks of other other players shared on the web, is often frowned upon by players. But in my opinion if we have a progression goal, the net decking is interesting. It is interesting to respect the work that others have already done ”.

El_Gran_boa: “When you start playing Magic, you have to limit the construction of decks. There is a lot of probability that at the end your game is not functional. There are a lot of content (streams, sites, ...) which allow you to see decks pre -assembled by pros.My advice is to take a game in the panel of archetypes that you like and to do only that one.It is only with the experience that you can try the Deck Building by changing a card for example. The goal being that the game is functional, otherwise you will not have fun. Many players groan after the net decking (drawing a game near the internet and copying it).But we cannot ignore everything we find on the internet today. It is a big revolution for Magic.Ten years ago, it didn't exist.Magic is a very deep game, but when you start it is useless to add additional difficulties. ”
